What I learned about reading and Writing this semester

Image
What I have learned Reading and Writing     At the beginning of the semester, I remember for one of our beginning assignments we wrote a reflection on who we think we are as a writer and what predictions we have for this class. I wrote that I was not the strongest reader and writer because if I am being quite honest, English and reading comprehension was never a subject I was passionate about or good at. But as the semester went on, that perspective began to shift.           Through different assignments and discussions made me realize that reading and writing are not fixed skills but are processes. Some assignments that stuck with me were the peer reviews and feedback we have done during class. Before I would rush through the drafts and feel overwhelmed by feedback. Now that we have done these exercises before submitting the final draft it allowed me to realize that feedback for a class like this is not about criticism but more as...

Goals and Values Within NYGCC Discourse community

Image
Unspoken Values      Within photography discourse communities, members share some common goals. There are unspoken values and beliefs that have stayed within photography communities everywhere and continue to be emphasized. For instance, both the Lomography article " Not your Grandma's Camera Club" and Mckee's "F raming Democracy: The Role of Photography in Shaping Public Discourse "explain how photography has the ability of putting emphasize on political and social topics and reshaping social perspectives. Mckee explains that photographs have the ability to shape the public opinion by demonstrating political injustices around the world. Similarly Lomography is using NYGCC discourse community as a way to stand up to gender inequality and allow women and people of any sexuality to participate in a male dominated field.  Image by Camera for Girls discussing injustice of genders  Not Your Grandma's Camera Club     Chandler Flannigan, creator of...

We are facing of shortage of film

Image
What is happening?     Many conversations have started about this ongoing problem that film enthusiasts are facing. In the last three to four years prices for film cameras and film itself have skyrocketed crazy. Back in the day it was affordable to stock up on film and getting your photos developed. Today many photographers and film enthusiasts question if they are getting ripped off or not. As much as us film photographers love to capture photos, we know that everything comes with a great cost.  Photo by Silver Grain Classics Magazine  Is film too expensive? Many photographers try to be supportive and still buy film in order to continue with their hobby, but many question if it is even worth it. In the magazine excerpt, " Film Prices Analyzed: Is Film Too Expensive? " it talks about the cause of the price of film skyrocketing in these past years. It states , "   Today, film is in short supply. The withdrawal from or substantial decrease in film production...

Not your Grandma's Camera Club

Image
What is NYGC Club  Not Your Grandma's Camera club was founded by Chandler Flanagan, a local film photographer from San Diego. In an article by Lomography, what she states in an interview is that this club is dedicated to creating a safe space for female photographers to be involved in photo walks, art nights and different collaborative shows. She makes it clear that everyone from every background, especially women who identify themselves as queer, gay, non-binary, etc. are welcomed because she is a queer woman herself who has witnessed other film communities not having enough women or gay representation.                                                               Photo from @notyourgrandmascameraclub on instagram Film Photography Slang     This community uses their own language through photography terms and...

Bringing Memories to life: DarkRoom Lab Review

Image
What is Dark Room Lab     When I first began my film photography hobby, I had to do a lot of research on how and where do I go get my pictures developed out of my cameras. My first initial thought was to go to CVS because that's where I have heard from the past that they develop disposable cameras. Unfortunately when I went to three local CVS's  they all told me that they no longer work with the Kodak developer company and no longer develop film. I was left hopeless because that was the only place I could link of that had access to these old school cameras. Knowing film is an outdated type of photography, I had to search on the internet to find another company that dedicates themselves to developing film. That is when I found the website Dark Room Lab . Dark Room lab has different types of services such as film development through mail and online purchasing options for different cameras , 35mm film and photo printing. This website is so convenient especially living ...

Discourse Community

Image
Film Community Experience      Today pictures are mostly taken on a smartphone or digitally. When I discovered my love and appreciation for film photography it made me wonder if there were any others out there that share the same interests as me. That was when I discovered that there are many different local groups and communities that share the practice of film photography with others no matter the level of practice they are in. For example, some local communities that share the same practice are Not Your Grandma's Camera Club; I'm Still Developing; or   Darkroomers.  These discourse community dedicates itself to expressing inclusivity and values through its practices, communication, and values. Their shared practices strengthens  community bonds and inspire the members to grow artistically and emotionally.  Members of the Community      All these camera clubs are very diverse when it comes to their members. The types of people that ...

Film Culture

Image
Film Inspirations    My love and fascination with film started when I would watch many film enthusiasts on YouTube and followed many local film photographers on Instagram. I started shooting with film about three or four years ago and I am still developing new knowledge and fascination about this hobby and community. On YouTube, a film enthusiast by the channel name of King Jvpes  dedicates his whole channel in talking about tips on how to use this type of camera correctly and showing off different types of cameras that may be used. In a specific video that he uploaded, he is at a camera convention where he meets other film photographers and asked them what camera will they be shooting on. This video brings me the most joy because it really shows the appreciation and love people have for this type of photography. It demonstrates that having a hobby or a liking like this one creates a huge community of great individuals that are just excited to demonstrate their ski...
