We are facing of shortage of film

 What is happening?

Many conversations have started about this ongoing problem that film enthusiasts are facing. In the last three to four years prices for film cameras and film itself have skyrocketed crazy. Back in the day it was affordable to stock up on film and getting your photos developed. Today many photographers and film enthusiasts question if they are getting ripped off or not. As much as us film photographers love to capture photos, we know that everything comes with a great cost.

Is film too expensive?

Many photographers try to be supportive and still buy film in order to continue with their hobby, but many question if it is even worth it. In the magazine excerpt, "Film Prices Analyzed: Is Film Too Expensive?" it talks about the cause of the price of film skyrocketing in these past years. It states , " Today, film is in short supply. The withdrawal from or substantial decrease in film production by Fuji means that the overall worldwide production levels have shrunk recently". In 2025, digital photography is most common everywhere, which is why film products are no longer being produced. Since there is such a short stock on these items, the costs of developing has also increased. Many are aware that this is not a "cheap alternative" for photography, which is why film is used more on rare occasions or only certain types of photoshoots.

Thoughts on this issue

Today many are facing the issue on whether or not it is a smart financial choice to keep this hobby. In the magazine excerpt by Vice called " Why is there a film shortage right now", shares a personal story about a famous film photographer in the UK named João Barreiros and his thoughts and opinions on the rise of film prices. It emphasizes " With the price of film becoming more inhibiting, Barreiros feels unsure about his future in film, and he’s started experimenting with digital work." It is a tough situation because Barreiros has expressed his love and appreciation for film photography and how he will go on a hunt just to find the perfect roll to use for his clients photographs Photographers can't even make a good profit from their photography if the products will costs a great portion of the production. Which is why he is questioning himself if he should just stick to digital photography like everyone else.

What Photographers care about

At the end of the day, there's no quick fix to this situation. Film has been around for many years and has found a way in peoples interest even in today's generation. As many photographers have expressed, the most important thing they care about in this community is making others happy and being excited to see their photos developed. Yes it is a very expensive hobby but many have shown that they are willing to spend a great amount of money just to maintain it. The film industry hopes to one day seeing prices drop or even a new type of way to develop film that isn't as expensive. In a world full of digital photos many want to still appreciate the beauty of 35 mm roll capturing every light and beautiful memory.
